John R. Whitman


Since 1994 John Whitman has been President, a Founder and a Managing Partner of Sycamore Ventures. The Firm is a global venture and growth capital investment advisor that has raised and invested more than US$600 million in the United States, China, India and Taiwan. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of z-kat, Inc. and Travelers Emergency Network.

From 1990 until he joined Sycamore, Mr. Whitman was an advisor to the Ford Motor Company, AT&T Venture Corp., the Hungarian-American Enterprise Fund, British and Commonwealth Holdings PLC, Coopers & Lybrand, the United States Agency for International Development (U.S.A.I.D.), and Prudential Securities Inc.

From 1987 through 1990, Mr. Whitman was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Prudential-Bache Interfunding Inc. (“PBIF”), an US$800 million Merchant Banking Fund entirely financed by the Prudential Insurance Company of America.

From 1980 to 1987, he was a Vice President of Citicorp Venture Capital where he completed 11 major leveraged buyout transactions. From 1972 to 1980, Mr. Whitman held various positions at Citicorp, most notably as Vice President in charge of the Corporate Finance Department of Citicorp International Bank Ltd. in London, and as a principal of Citicorp's corporate distressed loan department in New York.

After graduating from Yale University in 1966, Mr. Whitman served as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army in the US and the Republic of Vietnam. He received his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1971.
