CARE TO WALK
This annual fundraiser to promote breast and ovarian cancer awareness and the importance of early detection and treatment is truly a North Brunswick Community effort. Coordinated by the Care to Walk Club at North Brunswick Township High school, the walk is supported by township officials and departments, organizations, local businesses, and hundreds in the community who make donations or participate in the walk – about 500 each year.

Care to Walk was formed in 1998 by a group of women who had personally dealt with breast and/or ovarian cancer. They organized to provide guidance, positive reinforcement and helpful advice to those dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and to enhance public awareness of these cancers to the community. For more information go to: caretowalk.com

In 2006, the Care to Walk Club at North Brunswick Township High School assumed the leadership role in organizing the event and, for the first time, designated The Cancer Institute of New Jersey as the beneficiary of the proceeds. In two years, the event has raised more than $25,000 for breast and ovarian cancer research and programs. In addition, the Club donated and additional $10,000 last year that was raised by the North Brunswick Township rocking chair marathon.

QUARTERS FOR THE CURE
Since 2004, students from throughout the state have joined ranks to raise nearly $65,000 to support cancer research, patient care, and education programs – one quarter at a time. Best of all, participating schools tell us the Quarters campaign was a fun and meaningful project for the students, teachers, staff and communities involved

Quarters for the Cure is a fundraising program open to all schools in New Jersey and supports the fight against cancer at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ). Each participating school will receive one or two 5-gallon water jugs (depending upon school size). The participating schools will then have from January through April 11th to fill these jugs with as many quarters as they can. At the end of our campaign, the top fundraising schools will have the opportunity to host a school assembly at which CINJF staff will recognize your efforts, deliver prizes to the student body, and have a CINJ faculty member talk about the dangers of smoking, tanning and other risk factors for cancer.

In 2007, 27 schools raised an amazing $24,260.00 (97,040 quarters) to help CINJ make cancer discoveries, deliver extraordinary patient care, and provide community outreach. Congratulations to last year’s top fundraising school, Elms Elementary School in Jackson, which raised $3,123.00.

We’d be delighted to have your students add their enthusiasm, creativity, and caring efforts by participating in the Quarters for the Cure campaign.

WAVE OF HOPE
On Friday, June 6, 2008, the Long Branch Public Schools will host the 3rd Annual Walk for Cancer Research and Carnival to benefit pediatric cancer research at CINJ.

For nearly three decades, the staff of the Long Branch Public Schools has reached out to those in need. In 2005, the Long Branch school district, known as the Green Wave, decided to put a name on their fundraising effort and created the Wave of Hope organization comprised of a committee of retired school officials and other volunteers involved in the school system. In 2006, the organization became the Wave of Hope Foundation with the goal to raise money for schools and children throughout the world suffering devastations.

Hope Swarovsky braceletThe annual event for CINJ involves a months long fundraising effort from each of the district’s 10 schools. Efforts include solicitation for sponsors, sale of items, development by each school of carnival booth, and the effort culminates in a Friday evening carnival and candlelight walk in memory of those lost to cancer and in celebration of survivors.

The first event in June 2006 raised $32,000 and the 2007 event raised $26,000 all to benefit cancer research at CINJ. This year the Wave of Hope is selling custom HOPE Swarovski crystal bracelets (pictured above left). To purchase a 7” or 8” bracelet for $40.00 or for more information about the Walk, Fun Day or event sponsorship, please contact event co-chairs Nicole Pelligrino or Marissa Fornicola.

VOLLEY FOR LIFE
Hosted by the Tau Unit of Crossroads Middle School North in South Brunswick, this event comes together under the mantra, “When we all serve, everyone wins.” As a unit, hundreds of students have family and friends sponsor them to play continuous volleyball for five hours. Over the years, these donations, combined with the generous support of community businesses, have resulted in more than $22,000 to help CINJ advance cancer research, enhance patient care, and continue to provide community outreach and education. The Tau Unit is one of eight organized groups at Crossroads Middle School North. Each unit has its specific identity and is intended to serve as a personalized learning environment.
